Interweaving American history and personal family stories, acclaimed scholar Annette Gordon-Reed, a descendant of enslaved people brought to Texas as early as the 1820s, recounts the origins of Juneteenth and explores the legacies of the holiday that remain with us.

Annette Gordon-Reed, a trustee of the New-York Historical Society, is the Carl M. Loeb University Professor at Harvard University and a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian. Her latest book is On Juneteenth.

Peter S. Onuf (moderator), Thomas Jefferson Foundation Professor Emeritus at the University of Virginia and senior research fellow at the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies (Monticello), is coauthor with Professor Gordon-Reed of “Most Blessed of the Patriarchs”: Thomas Jefferson and the Empire of the Imagination.
